Smoke

Gonna drill down to it
see what we can unpack
then we’ll figure out
what we need to walk back
if you have your mask on
better hold it tight
wouldn’t want to lose it
if someone turns on the light
When the most trusted are untrustworthy
when the most believed are liars
it’s hard to get excited
when they say the house is on fire
until you smell the smoke
and feel the heat of the flames
if you make it out alive
you’ll wonder who to blame
Whose idea was this
just who is in charge here
can they be counted on to deliver
anything besides more fear
if there’s anything you still know is real
anything you know is true
your mission is to hold it up
even if they come for you

Medium Social

I like turtles
I like dogs and cats
I like cleavage
don’t hate me for that
I like sunrise, beer and steak
and all the pictures that you take
of your little baby cakes
I’m just a medium social guy
but I can’t help wondering why
Why can’t the world be a safer place
why don’t I have a prettier face
why is it so hard to ever win a race
why doesn’t everyone keep the Golden Rule
why don’t people in positions
of responsibility
really looked out for the interests
of folks like you and me
that would be so cool
I like turtles
I like dogs and cats
I like cleavage
don’t hate me for that
I like sunrise, beer and steak
and all the pictures that you take
of your little baby cakes
I’m just a medium social guy
but I can’t help wondering why
Why it’s easier to be critical
than it is to be correct
why do I keep taking the easy way
when I know what to expect
Folks been talking about Judgement Day
for a couple thousand years
why aren’t they more nervous
when it seems to be drawing near
I like turtles
I like dogs and cats
I like cleavage
don’t hate me for that
I like sunrise, beer and steak
and all the pictures that you take
of your little baby cakes
I’m just a medium social guy
but I can’t help wondering why

Where’s Walter?

In the good old days
natural disasters
and national tragedies
were the only reasons for
tuning in cable news on tv

But the times they are a changin’
there’s something happening here
the talking heads are pandering
to our deepest fears

If you’re concerned with commies
you can watch Fox news
if it’s fascists that you fear
CNN will do

Just want to know what’s going on
and decide your own point of view?
Go stand on a street corner,
tv is not for you

whether it’s real or whether it’s fake
I’ve had about all that I can take
Where’s Walter Cronkite when we need him?
Give me the facts, not your opinion.

Stance

I’m conservatively liberal
moderately radical
my right hand doesn’t know
what my left may do
the fake and the real
are disastrous deals
til doing no harm is
the most we can aspire to.

If you’re told you can have
your cake, and eat it, too,
someone might be playing you
find that hard place by a rock
and try to hold on to your socks

Dropping Shoes

One shoe, two shoes, three shoes drop
and someone’s walking funny
gonna keep raining til it stops
then it may get sunny
no fool like an old fool
being parted with his money
a laughing face in a rear-view mirror
waving see you later, honey.

so many want the world to change
I wish it would stay the same
for a little while
we could finally be happy
if happiness was final
but that’s not its style

The Foreign Legion’s gone domestic
for reasons that aren’t clear
they bully the civilians
and intimidate with fear
but if you get their number
you can throw sand in their gears
laughing at their breakdowns
will help to dry your tears.

so many want the world to change
I wish it would stay the same
for a little while
we could finally be happy
if happiness were final
but that’s not its style.

Admission

I admit
I love some Republicans
I love some Democrats
a Libertarian or two
and some that aren’t
sure where they’re at

You might have the blues
in a red state
you might be red-faced in a blue
don’t let those damned talking heads
tell you what to do
how to vote or what to think
what to eat or what to drink

We’re more alike
than we are different
at the end of every day
reach out to your
brothers and sisters
and work for a better way
(and it wouldn’t hurt to pray)

Fractional Truth

January 1973 on the streets
of Knoxville, Tennessee, I saw Nixon
on a billboard proclaiming Peace
with Honor. Two years later
watching the choppers taking
off from the roof of the Saigon
embassy I was certain
that he and I defined Honor
differently.

Fast forward 30 years
to W’s “Mission Accomplished”
party on that aircraft carrier. . .
at least the body counts went
down for Nixon. . .

Just two of the fractional truths
and wishful thinking we’ve been offered
through the years which come to mind
when Barack declares an end
to Afghan combat
or the demise of the economic crisis.
I don’t believe him, either.
