You Can’t Have Fun Like That Anymore

Drinking and driving was just what we did
on long ago Saturday nights
taking a chance on finding romance
trying to stay out of fights
Then the mothers all came out against it
trying to save children’s lives
now it’s expensive as well as dangerous
so I stay sober when I drive

You can’t have fun like that anymore
I don’t like it, but I know the score
if you try you might get thrown out the door
you can’t have fun like that anymore

I put my pants on one leg at a time
leaning against a wall
used to do it in the middle of the room
now I don’t want to fall
as I get older I find that I want
to spend less time on the floor
just another way that I can’t
have fun like that anymore

You can’t have fun like that anymore
I don’t like it, but I know the score
if you try you might get thrown out the door
you can’t have fun like that anymore

I used to drink like I voted
early and often
with nary a thought
about prisons or coffins
Now I worry about
an aching head
so I don’t pour a drink
unless I’m close to my bed

You can’t have fun like that anymore
I don’t like it, but I know the score
if you try you might get thrown out the door
you can’t have fun like that anymore

Keep Holding On

In a state of disrepair
might be easier to demolish
but a nail here, a nail there
a little spit and polish
won’t ever be as good as new
but better than being gone
when it’s all you know to do
keep holding on, hold on
In a state of disbelief
is this really real
a little comedy relief
might help the way I feel
a song bird at the feeder
or a rabbit on the lawn
when it’s all you know to do
keep holding on, hold on
Hold on to the beauty
hold on to the love
hold on to your faith
that there’s a God above
hold on
Is it cowardice or just wisdom
advertised to come with age
that has us pouring water on
the fires that feed our rage
and relying on the process
of karma to get it done
when it’s all you know to do
keep holding on, hold on
It might be your nature
to lower your head and swing
it might be your nature
to hold it high and sing
either choice is valid
if it gets you to the dawn
if it’s all you know to do
keep holding on, hold on
Hold on to the beauty
hold on to the love
hold on to your faith
that there’s a God above
hold on

Roadkill on the Highway of Love

a little too much country radio today, perhaps

As luck would have it
he ran out of luck
when she stepped out of
that blue pickup truck
his defense could not handle
the formation she showed
like a possum in the headlights
on a dark country road
he was roadkill
on the highway of love

the story has been told
millions of times
and immortalized
with impeccable rhymes
but each time it happens
it’s a unique case
and the victim goes down
with a smile on their face
like roadkill on
the highway of love

The highway of love
is all express lanes
the joys are intense
but so are the pains
you have to keep moving
’cause if you stand still
on the highway of love
you’ll just be more roadkill

Deep Subjects

Got nothin’ new to say about livin’ and dying
but it’s not for want of trying
sit around all day thinking and sighing
’til I think that my brain is frying

War and Peace, love and hate,
God and the devil, hurry up and wait.
Go round in circles, early and late
Take me home, to the Pearly Gates

On the subject of deep subjects
I say well. . .well well well

Gotta recommend staying out of trouble
when the bomb goes off, clean up the rubble
Don’t bet too much on the .daily double.
Don’t over-react to a busted bubble

Read Confucius and Kant, Aristotle and Sartre
you won’t find a cure for a broken heart.
Don’t be too dumb, don’t be too smart.
When there’s a job to do,
then do your part

On the subject of deep subjects
I say well. . .well well well.

Next Time

Next time you are surrounded,
why don’t you try giving in?
Victory through surrender,
it’s the only way to win.
It’s just yourself you’re fighting,
your mind versus your skin,
but which one fights for freedom,
and which one fights for sin?

Who of them deserves to judge
what we choose to deny?
Would anyone presume to teach
the sparrow how to fly?

Some of us must follow
and some of us must lead.
a victory is not hollow
just because you chance to bleed
This is not gall we swallow,
I’m not too proud to plead.
My reasons have no number,
they are endless as my need

Who could have the right to say
what’s right for you and I?
Who of them deserves to judge
what we choose to deny?

Conversation

“What you see is what you get,”
she said, with a crooked smile.
“If I could get what I’m seeing,”
he said, “I’d be happy for a while.”
“You’re like a dog, chasing a car,”
she said, “Whatcha gonna do if you catch it?”
“Hop right in and take it for a spin,
when I have an itch I scratch it.”

“You’re full of mud, and probably a dud,
but I’m mildly intrigued.”
He said, “Well, sit down, we’ll talk it over,
though I’m really not in your league.”
So she did, they did, that’s all we know
except the possibilities are infinite
for the good, the bad, or the beautiful,
you never know til you get in it.
