This is Why

Watching the riggers
drag machinery
sold American out
of the plant is like watching
your old school being bulldozed
images of faces known
memories of hours of work
and the spirits of operators past
finally leave the building.
This is why old people
do not like change.

We develop curious bonds
with inanimate machines.
Old #9 was my partner for years
she crushed a couple fingers
early in the relationship
but I grew to love her
and we could make metal do things
that others in house could not.
When I was moved on to other
machines and duties she
developed huge cracks in her frame

no one had ever seen
anything like it, probably physics
and metal fatigue but I saw it
rather as an old lover
committing suicide rather
than whoring out to any Tom
Dick or Harry with a piece of steel.
This is why old people
do not like change.
