Bad Road

Forty miles of bad road
followed by a thousand more
struggling to stay between the ditches
when you’ve forgotten what for
the scenery may be nicer
far from the beaten track
but your head’s so twisted from the turns
there ain’t no goin’ back

With bridges burned before you reach them
you just have to ford the stream
and so long down in the valley
the mountain top seems like a dream
but if you find a way to carry on
someday you’ll stand beside the sky
and when you feel that power
you’ll no longer wonder why
